Help me understand this Intus window install Detail. To me the circled area has two cantilevered unsupported boards. The big pic is located at http://www.intuswindows.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Frame-wall-with-TJI.Intus-Eforte-window+undersill-profile1-Model-1.pdf

one of the continuing questions is what is the best way to build a "dam" to keep water out. That detail works pretty well for that but it's not terribly practical. Most installers are installing a full depth box, often 3/4" plywood and setting the window on that, and figuring out some other detail for the dam. Also possible that the Euro's have a wall method where there is suppport at that point not shown on that detail. So you're right - window manufacturer's are not builders. There are a lot of details out there for "innie" windows and many of them work. greenbuildingadvisor.com has lots of details; you may have to pay to see them but not a lot in the scheme of things.

I have searched GBA, BSC, JLC, and Fine Homebuilding and I have a few variations on what you are saying similar to the following. I was hoping to gain some Euro wisdom..
.
Once I saw some of the thermal images out there I knew that the "Inbetweenie" or "halfie" as Bronwyn Barry calls it would offer the most efficiency. It is a variation on the "Innie" detail. Here is a slide from Barrys presentation

I still don't understand the Intus detail, but after watching videos of Florian Speier installing Zola widows I came up with this design using outsulate on the exterior to help break the thermal bridge created by the rough opening. I have drawn it with 1x4 "ring" instead of 2x4 for cases where there is no nailing fin. Also the nailing fin could be cut back I suppose. The window, being inset has an advantage of being protected from the weather more than say a typical "outie".

Intus is planning on updating its window details in the next few months. They will have the details for "innie" window installs including numerous wall systems like ICF.

Last year I heard Intus was planning an update to the details in early 2014. I thought perhaps that this was the update. I'll start holding my breath again.

I am also doing an innie or in-between install. The energy benefit is noticeable and protecting the window from the elements is also a big plus.
